Adding Centaur to Atlas -- whose lifetime as a weapon would be ended by Minuteman and Titan II -- would secure Atlas’ role in the emerging space program… keeping Convair in business for decades, and enriching Convair’s successor, Lockheed-Martin, as it does to this day.
