Silverstein championed the troubled Centaur, undertook its management at NASA’s Lewis (now Glenn) Research Center, and guided collaboration between his engineers and the GD-Astronautics engineers to perfect it. And bucking monumental resistance, he eventually won von Braun’s acceptance of liquid hydrogen for Saturn’s upper stages. This was not the original plan. It forever changed Saturn’s future.
